5 Easy Steps to Find Your Copywriting Niche

You want to become a copywriter but don't know where to begin? Here are my five easy steps for finding your niche, honing your skills, and earning that money! Maybe you're new to copywriting and you don't even understand what it is, how much more finding a niche, or you've been writing copies but they are not converting, relax, and follow through these five easy steps. Alright, let's delve in!

What is a niche? A niche is a specialized area of a market that is characterized by goods and services that appeal to a particular need or target market.

Given the rarity of universal appeal and the impossibility of a single service benefiting everyone all the time, every brand and company needs to cater to a specific niche.

People seek personalized answers to their unique challenges...

As a result, if you have a specifically tailored and well defined offer, you will find it much easier to market yourself as a copywriter and charge more for your services.

Okay! I'd give a more relatable example. Let's use "Drinks" they are liquids we take into our body right. So you can classify them under same industry (drinks/refreshments). But, there is lots of drinks industry, and they don't all sell all kinds of drinks, they pick a niche and become a king in it.

Let's examine some drink companies; Coca-cola; C-way; Heineken. These are all drink companies but they don't sell the same drinks. Coca-cola is a drink company that focus on soft drink and it's number 1 in the world. C-way specializes in water, you can't think of water if you're in Nigeria a d don't think C-way. Heineken also produces the alcoholic beer Heineken.

If you observe closely, you'd see that they satisfy specific needs. If I am very thirsty, I need a drink, and these three options are before me, my level of thirst or thirst desire would determine which of these drinks I'd take, and depending on what I'm thirsty for, I'd go with the drink that best satisfies me. This is because all three drinks cannot be a direct substitute for the other.

If I am very thirsty, and dehydrated I would likely go for water. If I'm not so thirsty but hot and probably hungry I'd most likely go for a bottle of chilled coke. And of I'm not hungry not very thirsty, but need a drink and prefer alcohol, I'd go for Heineken.

Okay I'm sure you understood that example. Now back to writing, just like we have different types of drinks, we have niches for copy writing. Put simply, we have different topics, and you must find the one that best suits you.

I know you're thinking of the one that is most profitable, well every niche is profitable, it depends on you the COPYWRITER and what you make of your market.

So now that you've understood that you should have a niche and that every niche can be profitable, the next question is how to find the niche that SUITS YOU.

Let me sound a WARNING here. Finding a Niche that suits you is not going to be as easy as ABC or as sweet as chocolate cake.  But if you give it genuine effort, it's going to be an interesting ride.  If you're still with me, hop on!

Finding your niche should happen naturally. Once you start writing, experiment to find out what you like, and let each project guide the next one so you can safely specialize and focus on getting better. The first step I'd recommend is

1 Look for topics that interest you.

There are things you can talk about all day without getting tired. For example, my brother can literally talk about football 365 days of the year without batting an eyelid. If you were to be a copywriter I tell you he'd make it writing about football! There’s a high likelihood you can find a copywriting niche that relates to your interests. Even right now, I can tell some topics are popping right into your head, yeah that's what I'm saying, that particular one you're very interested in. Write about it! Here are a few niches that might interest you.

  • Beauty
  • Health and Wellness
  • Wedding Industry
  • Food & Beverage
  • Local Businesses
  • Pet Industry
  • Sustainability
  • Breweries
  • Interior Design
  • Legal Firms
  • Sustainability
  • Personal Finance
  • Textiles
  • Travel

2. Determine the opportunities in that field.

Once you’ve determined the copywriting niches that interest you, decide whether there are opportunities in that field. Are there agencies or entrepreneurs in the area of interest that would gain from your copywriting? If so, you can explore it to see how you can make it lucrative.

3. Research your industry.

Learn as much as you can, take courses. There are ample courses online for copywriting.  Tailor your writing to your specific needs. Find out the brands you would be proud to work with? If you admire many groups in the same field, you may additionally desire to focus on that industry.

4. Start Writing!

Write! Write! Write! This is the way to become a pro. The way to become a good singer is to sing! The way to become a good seller is to sell! And the way to become a good copywriter is to write copies! So go ahead and start writing!
