Position: Front End Web Developer
Location: Fully remote, with hiring preference for candidates based in Latin America or East Africa.
Contract Term: Contract offer through December 31, 2024 with possibility of extension.
Compensation and Benefits: $1,300 USD per month, paid leave days, sick leave days, national holidays, and medical allowance
Women First Digital (WFD) is a collection of global, multilingual, online platforms providing information and counseling services for safe abortion, contraception and other sexual and reproductive health (SH) issues. WFD is comprised of the following three websites:
1. HowToUseAbortionPill.org
HowToUse is a one-stop global resource for safe abortion, providing simple instructions on how to use the medical abortion pills. HowToUse also provides a virtual assistant chatbot, abortion eLearning courses, country-specific abortion information, and is currently translated into 26 languages.
2. safe2choose.org
safe choose provides people all around the world with individualized support for abortion care so that they can have a safe abortion where, when and with whom they feel most comfortable. Our team of trained multilingual abortion counselors offer compassionate, person-centric abortion support, as well as referrals to local providers for in-clinic services, if desired.
3. Findmymethod.org
Find My Method shares information on contraception that is easy to understand, comprehensive, and globally representative.
We are looking for a Full-time Front End Developer:
Overall Objectives
The Developer will be responsible for implementing visual elements within our digital resources that support and promote usership. The Developer will combine the art of design and the science of programming to translate UI/UX design wireframes into code.
The Developer will collaborate with back-end developers and web designers to improve usability, solicit feedback, and build solutions as requested by the multiple stakeholders.
Responsibilities
Develop new user-facing features
Design mobile-based features
Build reusable code and libraries for future use
Ensure the technical feasibility of Ul/UX designs
Optimise application for maximum speed and scalability
Maintaining and improving our website(s).
Assure that all user input is validated before submitting to back-end
Collaborate with other team members and stakeholders
Write functional requirement documents and guides
Perform page speed optimization
Write and maintain tests
Develop reusable components using Gatsby and Next.js
Utilise TypeScript in development processes
Participate in sprint planning and daily stand-ups to keep track of project projects.
Create and maintain project documentation, such as user interface design guidelines and style guides.
Troubleshoot and debug issues as they arise.
Keep up to date with the latest trends and best practices in front-end development.
Skills And Qualifications
A bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field (or equivalent experience).
Proven work experience as a Front-end developer with a portfolio showcasing successful front-end projects. (Minimum 4 years).
Proficient understanding of web markup, including HTML5, CSS3
Proficient understanding of responsive and mobile first design.
Basic understanding of server-side CSS pre-processing platforms, such as LESS and SASS
Proficiency in using Tailwind CSS for styling
Experience with ShadCN Ul for building user interfaces.
Proficient understanding of client-side scripting and JavaScript frameworks, including Query
Good understanding of advanced JavaScript libraries and frameworks, React]S.
Others such as GatsbyS, Next|S, will be a plus.
Good understanding of asynchronous request handling, partial page updates, and AJAX
Proficient understanding of cross-browser compatibility issues and ways to work around them.
Expertise in page speed optimization
Proficiency in TypeScript
Experience writing and maintaining tests and documentation
Experience with RESTful and GraphQL APIs
Understanding of web performance tools and techniques (e.g., Lighthouse, Web
Core vitals, Webpack)
Understanding of Static Site Generation (SSG), Server-Side Rendering (SSR), and
Incremental Static Regeneration (ISR) techniques
Knowledge of functional programming is a plus.
Proficient understanding of code versioning tools, such as Git/ Github
Good understanding of SEO and Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG)
principles and ensuring that applications will adhere to them.
Understanding of web security protocols
Experience with Google Analytics integration and analysis
Basic knowledge of image authoring tools, to be able to crop, resize, or perform small adjustments on an image. Familiarity with tools such as Gimp, Figma or Photoshop is a plus.
Fluent in English. Working knowledge of other languages (Hindi, or Spanish etc.)
is a plus.
Proactive communication, organisation, and strong self-initiative are all essential practices within our global, fully remote team.
Interest in social justice and / or reproductive rights is a plus.
