Forest Senior Advisor - Office of the Special Presidential Envoy for Climate
The Office of Special Presidential Envoy for Climate John Kerry is seeking applications for a new position to develop and drive the forest and land use strategy. This issue area is a key priority for the overall international climate agenda. 
 
About the Role 
The incumbent will provide strategic direction for the Office of the Special Presidential Envoy, and advise Special Presidential Envoy John Kerry, other members of the team, and other U.S. government principals on issues related to forests, land use, and climate. The incumbent will also engage other government agencies, foreign governments, civil society and the private sector to advance this agenda. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in international climate change issues and forest and land use issues including REDD+ and carbon markets. 
 
Responsibilities will include, but not be limited to, the following: 
Develop strategies to address deforestation and enhance forest restoration and sustainable land use (e.g., agriculture-drive deforestation), including via bilateral and multilateral efforts, as well as public-private partnerships; 
Generate ideas for programs and initiatives to reduce deforestation; 
Collaborate with subject-matter experts in the Office of the Special Presidential Envoy and the Office of Global Change; 
Prepare deliverables that demonstrate progress and drive outcomes, including for COP28 and other high-level events; and, 
Represent the United States in meetings with government officials and civil society. 
Qualifications 
10 or more years of experience in international climate change, with a strong focus on forests, land use, and nature-based solutions. 
Strong understanding of concepts and current thinking on forest and land use issues, including: 
Results-based payments, carbon markets, and nature-based solutions finance 
Relevant forest and land use policy issues, including forest and land governance and tenure 
Major drivers of deforestation, including industrial and small-holder agriculture 
Technical concepts including forest carbon fluxes and sources of emissions in the AFOLU sector   
Experience formulating and designing large-scale initiatives and programs. 
Strong collaboration and team-work skills, including the ability to be effective in a matrixed environment. 
Desire to work in a fast-paced, highly collaborative environment 
Travel: up to 25%
