The Processing Foundation is thrilled to introduce pr05 (pronounced “pros”), a groundbreaking grant and mentorship endeavor designed to foster the professional advancement of early to mid-career software developers through active participation in open-source projects.
This presents a distinctive chance to evolve as a developer while leaving a tangible mark on software endeavors utilized by countless creatives, artists, educators, and students worldwide.
The Processing Foundation, a non-profit committed to advancing software education within the arts and artistic education within technology-oriented domains, endeavors to commemorate the diverse communities that invigorate these fields with vibrancy, liberation, and innovation.
**Thematic Areas**
Participants will select from a predefined set of projects that can be accomplished with mentorship. In the essence of the inaugural program's theme 'New Beginnings', a meticulously curated array of projects has been compiled for their capacity to strengthen and broaden the underpinnings of Processing and p5.js. Each project will be shepherded by a seasoned developer/contributor well-versed in the respective domain.
1. Streamline the Workflow for Processing Libraries, Tools, and Modes
2. Develop an Official Processing VSCode Extension
3. Prototype a Collaborative Desktop Editor for Processing
4. Overhaul the Friendly Error System (FES) for p5.js 2.0
5. Update CodeMirror to Version 6 for the p5.js Editor
**Benefits of Participation**
A total of five candidates will be invited to join the 2024 cohort. Selected participants will be granted a $10,000 stipend, enabling them to dedicate 200 hours over a span of 4 months to their contributions. Additionally, they will gain access to the Processing Foundation's expansive network encompassing developers, artists, designers, activists, educators, engineers, researchers, and collectives, fostering collaboration and exchange during and post-project completion.
Mentors will be assigned to each grantee, comprising seasoned software professionals and/or core contributors from the Processing and p5.js communities. Mentors will offer guidance encompassing creative, technical, and professional aspects, serving as advocates for the grantee's endeavors. Regular virtual meetings with mentors are expected.
