Nigeria's 3MTT Programme Hits 1.87 Million Registrations

In December 2023, the Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy launched one of the most ambitious digital skills programmes in Nigerian history. By 2026, the 3MTT programme has completed three cohorts, trained over 135,000 fellows directly, and extended learning resources to more than 300,000 additional learners through community platforms. 

Now, the numbers are even bigger. The 3MTT programme has recorded 1.87 million registrations across all 774 LGAs, with more than 125,000 Nigerians trained in cloud computing, AI, cybersecurity and software engineering. For a programme that started with 30,000 fellows, this represents a scale of reach that is genuinely difficult to overstate. 

But the number that matters most is not the registration count. It is this: 67% of the first cohort of 30,000 graduates secured employment opportunities or experienced career advancement within six months of completing the programme. In a country where youth unemployment remains one of the most persistent structural challenges, a 67% employment rate within six months is a number that demands serious attention. 

What the 3MTT Programme Actually Delivers

The 3MTT is a fully government-funded digital skills training programme coordinated by NITDA. Fellows choose from 12 in-demand technical tracks including software development, data analysis, AI and machine learning, cybersecurity, cloud computing, UI/UX design, digital marketing, and more. Training is delivered through an approved network of private sector training providers — not government bureaucracies — which means the curriculum is kept closer to what employers actually need.

Fellows receive structured learning over several months, assessments that verify competence rather than just attendance, and — increasingly — access to job placement infrastructure. In May 2026, the programme took a significant step forward — opening a Talent Registry in partnership with Skill Ladders and NITDA that lists over 3,000 active tech job opportunities, with successful applicants expected to earn a minimum monthly salary of ₦150,000 depending on job function, experience level, and placement. 

What This Means for Nigerian Techies Right Now

Three things are true simultaneously about the 3MTT in September 2026. First, it is producing real, measurable employment outcomes. Second, demand for places far exceeds supply — which means applying early and completing every stage of the process is essential. Third, the Talent Registry is a live pipeline between trained 3MTT fellows and paying employers. If you are already a 3MTT graduate, your profile on the registry is not optional. It is the most direct path to the employment outcomes the programme was designed to deliver.

NITDA has also announced plans to scale advanced AI and data science training through its DeepTechReady programme and a new five-year partnership with the European Union — which signals that the pipeline from training to employment is being actively strengthened, not wound down. 

The Honest Picture

Nigeria's tech talent gap remains real. Thousands of fellows are still unemployed after completing the programme. The 67% employment rate is strong, but it also means that 33% of the first cohort had not yet secured employment or advancement within six months of graduating. The 3MTT is a pathway, not a guarantee. What you do with the skills — the portfolio you build, the applications you send, the networks you join — determines which side of that statistic you land on.
