The AREF Research Fellowship is designed to empower talented, early-career African researchers to develop their research ideas and specialized skills. Fellows will also build research collaborations through mentorship and work towards securing major funding.

This year, funding is available for a "planned follow-through" at the awardee's home institution.

The AREF Research Development Fellowship (RDF) program supports African researchers tackling critical human health challenges in Africa.

Benefits of AREF Research Development Fellowship

  • Aim: To support emerging African research leaders working on critical human health challenges, helping them develop their research skills.
  • What we offer: A three to nine-month placement at a leading research institution in the UK, Europe, or Africa, with additional support at your home institution before and after the placement.
  • Up to £47,000 available.  

Selection Process

  • We aim to notify all applicants of the application outcomes by April 2025.
  • Successful Fellows are expected to start between July 2025 and December 2025.
  • Deadline for submitting all application documents: 13:00 GMT, 24th October, 2024.
