Opportunity Title: UNITAR Youth & Women Programme 2026: A Free Africa–Japan Opportunity for Nigerian Entrepreneurs
UNITAR Youth & Women Programme 2026: A Free Africa–Japan Opportunity for Nigerian Entrepreneurs (Deadline July 31)
If you're a young entrepreneur or SME founder in Nigeria looking for a free, government-funded programme with a direct path to Japan, the UNITAR Youth and Women Programme is one of the strongest opportunities open right now. Funded by the Government of Japan and tied to the TICAD9 Africa–Japan partnership, applications close on 31 July 2026.
What Is the UNITAR Youth and Women Programme?
The programme — officially titled "Empowering Youth and Women Amid Economic Instability: Enhancing Public-Private Partnerships" — is a free, application-based initiative for youth and women entrepreneurs across 11 Anglophone Sub-Saharan African countries, including Nigeria. It runs from August 2026 to February 2027 and combines training, mentorship, and a competitive path to an in-person immersion in Japan.
Who Is Eligible?
Youth and women aged 18–35
Nationals or residents of one of 11 Anglophone Sub-Saharan African countries, including Nigeria
Early-stage entrepreneurs, SME founders, innovators, and social entrepreneurs
No cost to apply or participate — the programme is fully funded by the Government of Japan
Programme Structure: What You'll Actually Get
Phase I — Foundations (August–October 2026): Virtual training in entrepreneurship, AI and digital transformation, leadership, SDGs, market analysis, and investment readiness.
Phase II — Applied Learning (November–December 2026): Business model refinement, financial and operational planning, pitch preparation, partnership mapping, and a Training-of-Trainers component.
Phase III — Japan Immersion (January–February 2027): A competitive selection process for a short in-person immersion in Hiroshima, Japan, including mentorship and ecosystem exposure — only top performers advance to this stage.
Phase IV — Investment Round Table: An Africa-Japan Innovation and Partnership Round Table where finalists showcase their projects to investors and development partners.
Why This Opportunity Stands Out
It's completely free — no application fees, no tuition, and travel/accommodation for the Japan leg is covered for those selected
Direct investor exposure through the closing Round Table
Selection criteria reward substance over polish — innovation and problem-solving capacity, leadership potential, and a clear, scalable project matter more than a flashy pitch deck
Is the UNITAR Youth and Women Programme free to apply for? Yes. The programme is fully funded by the Government of Japan and free for all eligible applicants, including any travel costs for participants selected for the Japan immersion phase.
