Opportunity Title: World Bank Africa Fellowship 2027: A Paid Six-Month Pathway to Washington D.C. for Young Nigerians

If you are a Nigerian in your PhD or just finished one, this is one of the most credible global fellowships open to you right now. The World Bank has opened applications for its 2027 Africa Fellowship Programme, offering young Sub-Saharan African researchers a fully paid, six-month placement working as consultants at World Bank headquarters in Washington D.C., or at a country office, starting January 2027.

Who qualifies:

The eligibility is specific, so check it carefully before you invest time in the application. You need to be a national of a Sub-Saharan African country, including Nigeria, aged 32 or younger as of 1 January 2027, and either currently in the final year of a PhD programme or have completed your doctorate within the last three years. Strong written and spoken English and demonstrated quantitative or analytical ability round out the core requirements.

Why this fellowship carries real weight:

This is not a generic online certificate or a short webinar series. Fellows work directly inside World Bank teams on development research, economic policy design, institutional development, and lending operations tied to Africa's development priorities. Past fellows have gone on to roles in governments, international organisations, think tanks, and universities, which tells you how seriously this programme is treated as a launchpad rather than just a resume line.

What the application process looks like:

Selection happens in two stages. First, the World Bank reviews academic qualifications and research focus areas to build a shortlist. From there, individual World Bank units assess shortlisted candidates directly and make final selections. One thing worth knowing upfront: if you are not shortlisted, you will not receive direct communication about it, so do not wait on a rejection email before moving on to other opportunities.

Why Nigerian PhD candidates specifically should pay attention:

Nigeria produces a significant share of Sub-Saharan Africa's doctoral graduates, but access to global institutional experience like this remains genuinely rare outside a small circle of well-connected researchers. The World Bank has also explicitly encouraged qualified women to apply, as part of a broader push to deepen African expertise inside global development research and policymaking. If you are early in your academic career and building toward a policy, research, or development economics path, this fellowship gives you something a Nigerian PhD alone often cannot: direct global institutional experience.

Timeline to know:

Applications close on 25 August 2026. Because the review process happens in two distinct stages, a strong, complete application matters more here than submitting early for its own sake, so use the time you have to make sure your research focus and analytical background are clearly presented.

If you meet the eligibility criteria, this is a fellowship worth the effort a strong application takes.
