The Centre for the Study of the Economies of Africa has opened applications for the 2026 Africa's Data Future Fellowship, a three-month virtual capacity-building programme designed for emerging leaders working in Africa's data governance and digital policy landscape. The fellowship is intended to equip early-career professionals and changemakers with knowledge, practical skills, and mentorship that can help them contribute to discussions around data governance and digital transformation across the continent. 

This is not a passive learning programme. It is an active research and policy fellowship with a stipend attached — $1,500 for three months of focused, expert-guided work on some of the most important questions in African digital governance today.

What Fellows Will Do

For the 2026 cohort, 10 fellows will be selected across Africa. At the end of the fellowship, each fellow will be required to develop a policy brief and a blog on one of the fellowship themes and present their findings at a dedicated workshop. The fellowship runs for three months starting October 2026, delivered entirely virtually through bi-weekly expert brainstorming sessions. Fellows are expected to engage with a relevant institution within the data and digital policy ecosystem in their country during the fellowship period, disseminating their findings and strengthening the link between research and local implementation.

Who Should Apply

This fellowship is designed for early-career African professionals working in data governance, digital policy, AI ethics, technology law, or related fields. Researchers, civil society practitioners, journalists covering tech and policy, public sector officials working on digital transformation, and academics studying Africa's digital economy are all strong candidates. The programme is delivered in both English and French, making it accessible across Anglophone and Francophone Africa.
